- Can it be fixed?
- Usually – if the canvas where the handles attach is still sound.
- Safe to fix yourself?
- No. Leather products can darken or spot vachetta, and glue won’t close cracks.
- What decides the cost?
- How many handles, canvas condition at the tabs, the hardware, and any trim that needs work.
- Mail it in?
- Yes, from anywhere in the US.
- While you wait?
- Some small repairs, yes. Call ahead.
Which problem is it?
Vachetta is natural, untreated leather that changes with age, and each sign below points to a different answer.
Dark honey patina
Vachetta darkens from pale beige toward honey with sunlight, skin oils and time. That patina is normal, and many owners like it. On its own it isn’t damage, and it doesn’t need a repair.
Cracks where the handle bends
When vachetta dries out, it cracks first at the bend near the tabs or along the edges. Fine surface lines are cosmetic, but cracks that open up or go through the leather mean the handle is weakening and should be replaced.
Sticky or gummy edges
The sealed edges along the handles can turn tacky, especially after heat. A bag left in a hot car in Las Vegas is a common example. If the leather is still sound, the edges can sometimes be refinished; if it’s cracking too, replacement is the better fix.
Canvas worn at the tabs
Look closely where the handle tabs meet the bag. If the canvas around the stitching is cracked, torn or pulling away, that area has to be dealt with first, and its condition decides what’s possible for the handles.
What to do right now.
- Stop carrying the bag by a handle with open cracks, and hold it from underneath instead.
- Keep the bag out of hot cars and direct sun, which speed up darkening and sticky edges.
- Photograph both handles, the tabs where they attach, the canvas around them and the hardware.
What not to do.
- Don’t rub conditioners, oils or baby wipes into vachetta, because it soaks them up and can darken or spot unevenly.
- Don’t glue or tape cracked handles, which leaves residue and can damage the canvas at the tabs.
- Don’t dry wet vachetta with a hair dryer, since the heat dries it out and makes cracking worse.
When it’s not worth repairing.
If the canvas itself is cracked or torn through around the tabs and across the body, new handles won’t make the bag sturdy again, and the repair may not be worth it. It can also make sense to leave things alone: handles that are dark but soft and free of cracks don’t need replacing just because they’re no longer light.
How we fix it.
- We look at the handles, the tabs, the canvas at the attachment points and the hardware, and tell you what’s realistic before any work starts.
- Where the canvas at the tabs is worn, we patch or re-stitch that area first so the handles have something solid to hold.
- When the handles are past saving, we replace them with new natural leather and reuse the original hardware when it’s in good shape.
- New natural leather starts light, so it won’t match an aged patina at first; it darkens with use, and we go over what to expect.
