Louboutin red soles wearing off? Here’s what can be done

Yes. Red wearing off the bottom is normal wear, and Louboutin’s own care pages say so. If the sole is still sound, the red can be restored, and a protective sole guard can be added to slow future wear. Free photo estimate: walk in, text a photo, or mail your pair in from anywhere in the US.

Can it be fixed?
Yes. Worn red is normal and can be restored; a sole guard helps prevent it.
Safe to fix yourself?
Avoid it. Paints, markers and clear coats crack, peel and make restoration harder.
What decides the cost?
How worn the soles are, restoration or guard, old paint to remove, and heel tip condition.
Mail it in?
Yes, from anywhere in the US.
While you wait?
Some small repairs, yes. Call ahead.

Which problem is it?

How far the wear has gone decides which option fits your pair.

New pair, first scuffs

Red starts rubbing off under the ball of the foot after the first few wears, especially on rough pavement. If the soles are still mostly red, this is the best time to add a protective sole guard, before the wear spreads.

Red faded, sole still sound

The red has worn away in patches and the natural leather shows through, but the sole isn’t thin or damaged. This is the typical case for red-sole restoration, and a guard can be added afterward to protect the new color.

Sole worn thin or peeling

If the leather sole is worn thin at the ball, scraped through at the toe or starting to lift at the edge, it needs more than color. The sole may have to be repaired or replaced before the red can come back.

Old DIY paint flaking

Red paint, nail polish or a clear coat that is cracking and flaking has to come off before the sole can be restored. Removal adds work, so mention it when you send photos.

What to do right now.

  • If the soles are still mostly red, go easy on rough pavement and asphalt until you decide on a guard.
  • Check the heel tips too, because a worn tip lets the heel itself get damaged.
  • Photograph both soles flat, plus close-ups of the worn areas and the heel tips.
  • Store the pair in its dust bags, away from heat and direct sun.

What not to do.

  • Don’t touch up the red with nail polish, markers or craft paint, which crack and flake and must be removed before a proper restoration.
  • Don’t brush on a clear coat or spray sealer from a kit, since it can peel, cloud and trap dirt on the sole.
  • Don’t sand the soles yourself to even out the wear.

When it’s not worth repairing.

If the upper is badly scuffed or torn, or the shoes no longer fit, new red won’t make the pair wearable again. It can also be fine to do nothing: if you rarely wear them and the scuffs barely show, a little worn red is normal and many owners simply leave it. Restoration makes the most sense on a pair you love and wear.

How we fix it.

  1. We look at the soles, the heel tips and the upper to see how deep the wear goes and whether old paint or coating has to come off.
  2. For worn red on a sound sole, we restore the red. If the leather is thin or damaged, we explain the sole repair options first.
  3. To slow future wear, we can add a protective sole guard to the bottom of the shoe.
  4. We also check the heel tips and replace them if they are worn, a separate fix that protects the heel.

Questions we hear

Good to know.

Ask the workshop
Is it normal for Louboutin red soles to wear off?

Yes. The red is a lacquered finish on a leather sole, and it rubs off wherever the sole meets the ground. Louboutin’s own care pages call this normal wear, not a defect. How fast it happens depends on how often you wear them and where you walk.

Should I put a sole guard on new Louboutins?

If you plan to wear them often, it’s worth considering. A protective sole guard covers the part of the sole that touches the ground most and takes the wear instead of the red. It adds a thin layer to the bottom, so it comes down to how you wear them and what you prefer.

Can I mail my Louboutins in for red sole repair?

Yes. Text photos of both soles to (702) 622-0659 or use the estimate form for a free preliminary estimate. Ship the pair with tracking; insurance is recommended. The shop inspects them and confirms the price, and work starts only after you say yes. You pay by card over the phone, and they ship back with tracking.

Will restoring the red sole affect resale value?

It can go either way, because buyers differ. Some prefer soles that look red and clean, while others want to know about any work done. If you plan to sell, check what your resale platform or buyer expects before you decide, and keep a record of the repair.

Can I mail it in from another state?

Yes. Send photos for a free estimate, then ship the item to the workshop. We inspect it and confirm the price before any work starts, and you pay by card over the phone before it is shipped back.

Can you repair it while I wait?

Some small repairs can be done while you wait. Call (702) 553-3273 before you come so we can check the item and the workshop’s schedule.
