- Can it be fixed?
- Usually – often with just a new slider or pull; sometimes with a whole new zipper.
- Safe to fix yourself?
- Only for lining caught in the teeth. Worn sliders and missing teeth need a shop.
- What decides the cost?
- Slider, pull or full zipper, the zipper’s length, and how it’s sewn into the bag.
- Mail it in?
- Yes, from anywhere in the US.
- While you wait?
- Some small repairs, yes. Call ahead.
Which problem is it?
Open and close the zipper slowly, in good light, and see which of these it looks like:
Splits open when you close it
The teeth come apart right behind the slider, often on a bag that’s packed full. A purse slider is small and gets opened and closed many times a day, so it wears out. If the teeth look straight and complete, a new slider is often all it needs.
Pull or charm broke off
The zipper still runs, but the pull tab, leather tassel or charm snapped off. This is usually the smallest repair. Keep the broken piece: on a designer bag the pull may carry a logo, and you can ask whether it can be reused.
Stuck on the lining
The slider jams in one spot because lining fabric or a loose thread got caught in the teeth. Back it off gently the way it came. If the lining is torn or fraying near the zipper, it will keep catching until that’s repaired too.
Pulling away from the leather
The stitching that holds the zipper tape to the bag has come undone, the tape is fraying at the ends, or teeth are missing. Loose stitching can be sewn again. Missing teeth or a torn tape usually mean a new zipper.
What to do right now.
- Take out heavy and bulky items so the zipper isn’t straining to hold the bag shut.
- If the slider is caught on the lining, ease the fabric out and move the slider back the way it came, without yanking.
- Keep any piece that came off, like the pull, the charm or the slider, in a small bag.
- Photograph the whole bag, the full length of the zipper and both ends, plus a close-up of the slider.
What not to do.
- Don’t keep forcing the zipper closed over an overstuffed bag, because the strain spreads the slider and pulls the tape away from the leather.
- Don’t pinch a small purse slider with pliers; it can crack the slider or scratch the finish on the hardware.
- Don’t burn or snip loose threads in the teeth with a lighter or scissors, since it’s easy to scorch or nick the leather right next to them.
When it’s not worth repairing.
If the bag was inexpensive and the coated or bonded material around the zipper is already peeling, new stitching has nothing solid to hold, and a full zipper replacement can cost more than the bag is worth. A new bag usually makes more sense then. And if only the pull broke, you don’t need a whole new zipper – a new pull is the honest fix.
How we fix it.
- We check the slider, the teeth, the tape and the stitching, and confirm the price with you before any work starts.
- If the teeth and tape are sound, we replace the worn slider or the broken pull and keep the original zipper.
- If the zipper is pulling away from the bag, we re-stitch it to the leather along its seam.
- When a zipper is beyond repair, we replace it with one as close as we can get to the original in length, tooth size and metal color, and stitch it back into the bag.
